PROFESSOR GEORGE BENNEH – THE TITANS GO HOME ONE BY ONE
Commonwealth Hall(Vandal City) has the enviable reputation of producing men who, in their days as students of the Hall, effortlessly combined sports with academic work and blindingly shone in both areas. We count Professor George Benneh among this galaxy of stars who brought honour to themselves and the Hall.
Born in 1934, then young George was among the second batch of students admitted to the Hall during the 1957/58 Academic Year.
By the time he left the University in 1960, he had covered himself with glory as the Captain of the University Athletics Club(1958-1959).
With a B.A.(Honours) degree in Geography under his belt. George went to the London School of Economics and Political Science(University of London) and came out with a P.h. D in 1964. He returned to teach Geography.
Prof. Benneh was the Hall’s Tutor. He became Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana,Legon, from 1992-1996. He became a Full Professor in 1989 and retired from Legon as an Emeritus Professor.
In later years, this fine athlete was in a wheelchair but his spirit was high when Vandals visited him during one jamboree session. May his soul rest in peace.
